National Lighthouse Day
We are so excited to highlight our future resident Dianne on National Lighthouse Day! Dianne was instrumental in getting the Florida Trust Historic Preservation to recognize the Pensacola Lighthouse for their restoration. It took five years and $2.5 million to do it. Dianne is a wealth of information and she and her husband have left a legacy that many will be able to enjoy for generations to come. The Pensacola Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse in Florida. It was the first lighthouse on the Gulf Coast of Florida and is still an active aid to navigation. The first lighthouse was built in 1824 and was located about one-half mile east of the present lighthouse. It was a wooden structure with a whale oil lamp. The present lighthouse was built in 1856 and is made of brick with a concrete fill. It is 159 feet tall and has a first-order Fresnel lens. The lighthouse was extinguished during the Civil War but was restored after the war. It was automated in 1965 and is now tended by the Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team. The lighthouse is a popular tourist destination and offers stunning views of Pensacola Bay, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Blue Angels.
Interesting facts about the Pensacola Lighthouse:
- The first keeper, Jeremiah Ingraham, faithfully trudged up the tower to refill the whale oil lamps and every two hours to pull up the weights that rotated the clockwork mechanism until his death in 1840.
- His wife Michaela succeeded him and continued as the keeper until her death in 1855.
- The lens has 344 prisms set in a beehive design.
- The 1000 watt bulb appears to flash at 20 second intervals and can be seen for 27 miles. -The light’s focal plane is 191 feet above sea level and is the highest focal plane in Florida. -The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation and is tended by the Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team. Community Involvement
To take a break from the summer heat, we thought it would be fun to share a little collage of the partnerships and community we have been building up in anticipation of our community’s Grand Opening.
We cannot wait to serve our residents and we will continue to support and build our community for the better.
